The Recorder sport editor Grant Hanlon has made a slam dunk for basketball by winning the prestige State Basketball Award for Media Coverage.
Basketball Australia has recognised the detailed coverage of the sport in the paper as the best in the State.
In a city that is mad about its sport, basketball gave the Recorder the nod.
A presentation of awards will be made at the 16th Annual Basketball Awards 2008 in Ballarat, Victoria, tomorrow when the Recorder will be rewarded for its performance from June, 2007, to May this year.
The award recognises the “excellent weekly coverage of the local association and regional basketball including results, photos, scores, culminating in a number of features dealing with end of season finals articles and MVP details”.
The citation also mentions “additional features dealing with local players who made State and National teams and maintaining a high content, high standard of coverage for a number of years”.
Mr Hanlon responded by saying: “Junior sport plays a vital role in the lives of people in our community and it is great to be involved in the promotion of it through the newspaper.
“Basketball is a high profile sport in Port Pirie and The Recorder is only too pleased to give it the coverage it deserves.”
