Port Pirie juniors shine at State hockey titles in Adelaide

11/07/2008 10:52:00 AM
Port Pirie junior hockey players were in good supply at this year’s new SA Zone Championships for Under 15 and Under 17 and Junior State Championships for Under 13.

There were many highlights including the U13 boys team winning the final on Sunday and the Under 15 boys Mid North Zone team making in into the grand final. Special thanks to all coaches, team managers, players who made themselves available and to parents for their commitment and support of their children.

The U15 boys team held second place after the final minor round games of the tournament and so played in the semi against City West. This game went into extra time time sudden death - no-one scored, therefore Mid North Zone won on percentage. Played against City East in the grand final, but lost in controversial circumstances 2-1 in the dying stages of the game.

City East was awarded a short corner by the umpire (which should have been a 16 yard defensive free hit for Mid North due to a raised ball going into the circle), and they then scored their 2nd goal with two seconds remaining on the clock to win the game 2-1.

The Mid North Zone U15 boys hockey team fought hard for every second on the field and should be extremely proud how they conducted themselves. Their discipline and attitude throughout the weekend was one Port Pirie and surrounding districts should be proud of, and the whole team played as a team for each game. Each player received a silver medallion as runners-up in the carnival.

The U17 Girls Mid North Zone team played in the semi, went into extra time sudden death, 2 x 6 minute halves with 9 players first, then reduced to 7 players second half. There was no score, therefore City East went into the grand final on percentage. Unfortunately Mid North was 4-1 up, late into the game, but City East (Adelaide/Burnside) registered a miraculous comeback to draw level and force the extra time playoff.

The U17 Boys Mid North Zone team also played in the semi, which went into extra time sudden death, and City East (Adelaide/Burnside) was given a short corner on the final whistle, which created a penalty stroke which was converted so they won the game by 1 goal in a devastating loss to the Mid North team.
